Gingivitis and Early Periodontal (Gum) Disease
Treatment Program

Your Doctor and Hygienist have recommended this treatment because you have been diagnosed with Gingivitis and early Periodontal (gum) Disease.  This is a chronic infection that, left untreated, destroys the supporting structure of the teeth.   It is the leading cause of adult tooth loss, and it affects more than 75% of the population.  This infection is often “silent”, with serious consequences.  It can affect on tooth or many teeth.   It works this way: Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that clings to the surface of your teeth and gums. If not consistently and completely removed, it hardens into a rough deposit called tartar or calculus. Once tartar develops, the only way to remove it is to have your teeth professionally cleaned. Tartar below the gum line causes inflammation and infection and your gums may redden, swell, and bleed easily. Your body reacts to this infection by moving the bone supporting your teeth away from the infection.  Eventually, your teeth can loosen and may have to be removed.  Fortunately, Periodontal Disease is preventable and treatable!

Some factors that increase the risk of developing this disease are:

·        Tobacco smoking or chewing

·        Certain medications that cause dry mouth

·        Crooked teeth

·        Pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptives

·        Fillings that have become defective

·        Systemic disease such as diabetes

·        Poor fitting bridges or tipped teeth

·        Poor oral hygiene

Our program’s goal is to eliminate inflammation and infection that are present, leaving you with healthier gums that are not swollen, red or bleed easily, reduced pocket depths and fresher breath.  We accomplish this by a series of detail cleanings and by helping you establish good oral hygiene habits to control the disease.

This treatment will consist of 2 appointments; the first appointment in the program is called a Full Mouth Debridement.

Your Hygienist will remove irritating tarter and plaque so that the healing process can begin.  Tooth polish is an irritant, so this will be done at your next appointment when your gums have healed.  We will also teach you how to use proper home care techniques.  It is essential that you follow the home care instructions given to you by your hygienist.  Correct flossing, brushing, etc. are not optional.  You successful healing depends on your care at home.  If you experience any gum soreness at all, you may rise with warm salt water 2-3 times a day during the first week to ease it.  Any difficulties or questions concerning your treatment should be discussed with your hygienist.

Approximately 6-8 weeks later, you will need to have your second appointment.  This visit will consist of a re-evaluation of tissue and response to treatment.  Your teeth will be polished and gums will be rechecked.  If we are satisfied with the therapy results, you will be placed on a 3, 4, or 6-month periodontal maintenance schedule.

There is no “cure” for periodontal disease, only “disease management”.  You can also never re-grow the bone that has been lost around your teeth.  But, together we can maintain what is left!  However, our professional efforts will not work alone.  The success of this treatment depends on us, the health care professionals, and your commitment to your oral health.    We look forward to helping you keep your mouth healthy for a lifetime!
